Helping European agriculture navigate towards a Safe and Just Operating Space

European agriculture must provide food, livelihoods and economic value while operating within planetary limits and supporting social well‑being.

The challenge: European agriculture faces interconnected challenges

Climate change, biodiversity loss, resource pressures, pollution, changing diets, economic uncertainty and social inequalities are reshaping the future of European agriculture.

These challenges cannot be addressed effectively one at a time. Actions that improve one outcome may create new pressures elsewhere. A solution that benefits the environment may create economic or social challenges if the wider consequences are not understood.

Europe therefore needs better ways to understand these connections and explore possible pathways forward.

Our ambition: From understanding the challenge to exploring ways forward

BrightSpace brings together knowledge, data, models, tools and stakeholder processes needed to help explore how European agriculture can move towards a future that is both environmentally safe and socially just.

We are:

  • Defining what a Safe and Just Operating Space means for European agriculture.
  • Measuring where agriculture currently stands through indicators, data and monitoring.
  • Understanding the drivers shaping agricultural and food systems.
  • Exploring alternative futures through integrated modelling and scenarios.
  • Assessing the consequences of policies, technologies, institutions and changing consumption.
  • Developing transition pathways and an interactive roadmap towards a Safe and Just Operating Space.
