Towards a safe and just operating
space for EU agriculture

BrightSpace at OECD Conference, 28 October, Paris, FR

Wageningen Economic Research (WR) and Planslab were representing the BrightSpace consortium at the Conference on Sustainable Agricultural Productivity to Address Food Systems Challenges: Measurement, Data, Drivers and Policies organised on 28 October 2024 in Paris by the OECD’s Trade and Agriculture Directorate, in collaboration with the European Commission’s Directorate-General on Agriculture and Rural Development and the United States Department of Agriculture.

The conference brought together policy makers and researchers to discuss the concept and measurement of sustainable agricultural productivity. It aimed to bridge the gap between academic and policy communities and translate and orient research efforts to pragmatic and policy relevant ways to measure agricultural performance for achieving sustainable productivity growth to address food systems challenges. The exchange among experts and policy makers focussed on the current and evolving state of sustainable agricultural productivity performance and the state of the art on measurement and data, as well as on the main challenges to reconcile productivity and sustainability, focusing particularly on the environmental aspects of sustainability.

BrightSpace coordinator Marc Müller from WR was invited discussant in Session “Lessons from the field: How to achieve environmentally sustainable productivity in agriculture? Specific practices, processes and technologies and results”. In his talk Marc gave an overview of BrightSpace and emphasized how the operalisation of the concept of Safe and Just Operational Space for agriculture can grasp all dimensions of sustainable agricultural productivity fostering evidence-based policy making in the EU.

We would like to also thank here the organisers for the invitation and for this great opportunity to expose our project to a wide array of policy makers and professionals working in this area across the world.
