BrightSpace 2nd Modelling Workshop to Advance SJOS Indicator Integration

On April 8, 2025, the second BrightSpace Modelling Workshop brought together modelling teams both in-person at the WUR The Hague Office and online via Teams. The workshop focused on strengthening the scientific and technical foundations of the Safe and Just Operating Space (SJOS) indicator framework by refining model integration and ensuring alignment with key 2025 deliverables.

Key Objectives:

  • Comprehensive Indicator Coverage: Ensuring that all SJOS indicator domains are effectively represented within at least one of the project’s models.
  • Refined Indicator Modelling: Diving deep into the modelling landscape to identify gaps, overlaps, and flagship models for overlapping indicator domains.
  • Technology Integration: Exploring how emerging technologies can be best integrated into models, and prioritizing the most promising tools for development.
  • Deliverable Planning: Aligning ongoing modelling activities with the delivery of upcoming project milestones.
  • Action Tracking: Setting up a clear follow-up process with an action list and tracking system to monitor implementation across modelling teams.

Program Highlights:

  • SJOS Indicators & Deliverables Review: The session opened with a recap of SJOS indicators and an update on implementation status and technology integration.
  • Model Deep Dive Sessions: A core part of the day involved mapping out how each model covers the SJOS indicators, identifying potential overlaps and synergies, and refining groupings of indicators to guide model alignment.
  • Action Planning & Follow-Up: The workshop concluded with the setup of task force groups, assignment of contact points across modelling teams, and initiation of a shared tracking system to ensure follow-through on planned actions.

The workshop provided a structured and collaborative environment to enhance cross-team understanding, foster coordination, and drive forward the integration of just indicators into modelling frameworks. This is a key step in delivering actionable, science-based insights for European agricultural and environmental policy.
