A new open-access dataset—GRAPE: Global Research on Agriculture – Personnel & Expenditures (1960–2022)—has been published in Nature Scientific Data. Co-led by BrightSpace WP7 leader Michiel van Dijk, GRAPE offers comprehensive country-level data on public agricultural R&D investment and researcher staffing, covering 190 nations across six decades.
Why GRAPE Matters:
- Policy-Driven Insights: Public R&D investments are a critical lever for enhancing agricultural productivity, food security, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability
- Robust and Transparent: The GRAPE dataset harmonises international statistics, fills key data gaps through imputation, and provides detailed documentation and code for full transparency
- Global Coverage: Capturing nearly 100% of global agricultural GDP, GRAPE bridges regional and temporal disparities in comparable R&D data.
BrightSpace WP7 Contribution:
Within BrightSpace, WP7 integrates this dataset into macro-level models—such as CAPRI, GLOBIOM, and MAGNET. By embedding long‑term R&D investment and research capacity data, BrightSpace strengthens the analysis of socio‑environmental trade-offs and enhances model-driven policy insights.
Meet Michiel in Bonn:
Want to learn more? Michiel will present GRAPE at the 18th EAAE Congress, 26–29 August 2025 in Bonn, where BrightSpace is showcasing the data’s application to food system transformation.
