On 17 November 2025 partners of WP10 – Exploring Safe and Just Operating Space (SJOS) Pathways convened online to launch the next phase of work under Task 10.3. This task aims to create an interactive roadmap that will translate complex scenario analyses into actionable policy guidance for the post-2027 CAP.
Setting the Scope of Task 10.3
The meeting opened with an overview of Task 10.3, which runs from Month 46 to Month 60 and is jointly led by Wageningen Research (WR) with support from all WP10 partners. The task will synthesise and critically assess the outputs of Task 10.2, develop a strategic roadmap for EU agriculture, and support stakeholder engagement through a dedicated retreat (M52) and thematic seminar (M54). The final outputs include:
- D10.2 Final Roadmap Report (M56)
- D10.3 Interactive Dashboard of SJOS Indicator Outcomes (M60)
The interactive roadmap and its associated dashboards are planned to become one of the main online vehicles for conveying BrightSpace project results. They will be designed to host a suite of interactive tools tailored to different user groups — ranging from policymakers to researchers, civil society organisations, and practitioners across the agri-food system.
By providing accessible, evidence-based insights through a flexible and user-friendly interface, the roadmap will serve as the primary exploitation space of the project. It connects directly to Task 11.4 (Exploitation strategy and plan), which focuses on preparing and guiding the transfer, uptake, and long-term use of BrightSpace results by fostering awareness and uptake of BrightSpace insights and results across stakeholder communities, external actors and end-users, by ensuring that project results support long-term impact beyond the project duration through the project website being a hub and router to the collection of tools and results. The interactive roadmap contributes not only to communication and accessibility, but also to the creation of tangible pathways for impact, practice change, and continued innovation.
Partners’ Technical Capabilities and Resources
A key part of today’s meeting focused on mapping available expertise and digital infrastructure across the consortium, including the IIASA Accelerator Platform – A robust back-end for scenario data, indicator metadata, and FAIR-compliant workflows , WSER Power BI Experience – Strong in dashboard design, reporting, and wiki integration, and WUR WANDER Lab – Bringing expertise in participatory design, digital twins, and advanced geospatial and UX visualisation. This mapping will guide decisions on how best to combine high-quality data, interactive visual design, and stakeholder needs.
Exploring Goals and UX Priorities
Partners discussed the central question underpinning the roadmap: Which features and functionalities are most critical for policymakers, stakeholders, and non-technical users?
Key themes included:
- Clear, intuitive narratives to avoid data overload
- Layered interactivity to maintain transparency and avoid masking important dynamics
- Integration of safe and just dimensions in a way that highlights policy alignment or deviation
- Tools enabling multi-scenario comparison and foresight
- Inspiration from established EU dashboards such as the EU Resilience Dashboard, JRC Food System Monitoring Dashboard, and CAP Indicator Dashboards
These insights will support the conceptual design and ensure the roadmap functions as an effective science–policy interface.
Next Steps and Implementation Pathway
The consortium agreed on the following next steps:
- Concept & Requirements (Q1 2026): Develop a shared design framework outlining needs, functionalities, and core architecture.
- Set the technical foundations and arrange UX Co-Creation.
- Core Development: Integrate data, interactive modules, geospatial elements, and scenario comparison features.
- Testing & Validation: Conduct stakeholder usability testing and prepare advanced features.
The meeting is an important step of the process to creating a science-based, user-centred, and exploitation-ready BrightSpace roadmap that will support policy, practice, and research communities across Europe to assist navigating pathways toward a Safe and Just Operating Space for EU agriculture.
