24 September 2025 — Leuven. During the 2nd BrightSpace Stakeholder Meeting, George Philippidis (CITA), leader of Work Package 10 (WP10): “Reaping What We Sow – Exploring SJOS Transition Pathways,” sat down for an interview to discuss how WP10 is shaping the project’s vision for a safe, just, and sustainable EU food and agriculture system. The newly released interview clip captures his insights on scenario development, stakeholder engagement, and the modelling work that will inform the project’s final roadmap and interactive dashboard.
In the interview, Philippidis explains that WP10’s mission is to design and test future pathways for EU agriculture, examining how policies, technologies, and stakeholder choices can interact to support a fair and sustainable agricultural transition. “This work is crucial because it helps the project show possible futures and guide decision-makers toward better outcomes,” he notes.
A central feature of WP10 is its close collaboration with other parts of BrightSpace. Philippidis highlights how the scenario narratives are built on the modelling foundations provided by WP8 and WP9:
“It’s a back-and-forth process: our narratives inform the models, and the model results refine the scenarios.”
Scenarios to Guide Stakeholder Dialogue
The Leuven retreat marks a key consultation moment for WP10. Stakeholders are engaging with several future scenarios for EU agriculture, spanning from highly globalised market systems to more locally grounded, holistic approaches. These discussions will help WP10 assess the credibility, opportunities, and challenges inherent in each transition pathway.
Stakeholder feedback plays a decisive role:
“It helps us refine assumptions, adjust policy levers, and identify gaps in the models. This ensures that our final roadmap reflects real-world perspectives and is useful for policymakers and farmers alike.”
From Consultation to Roadmap and Dashboard
The insights gathered in Leuven feed directly into the final WP10 outputs, including:
- the Roadmap Report (D10.1) that will provide policy-relevant recommendations for CAP post-2027, and
- the interactive SJOS dashboard (D10.3), which will allow decision-makers to explore transition pathways and their impacts through accessible science-based indicators.
George emphasises the long-term value of these tools:
“They’ll show practical, science-based pathways to reach a safe and just food system, and remain interactive so decision-makers can explore different options over time.”
A Vision for EU Agricultural Policy
Concluding the interview, George sums up the ambition of WP10 in one sentence:
“BrightSpace is helping the EU plan for a sustainable, fair, and resilient agricultural future.”
The full interview clip with George Philippidis is now available and offers a concise, accessible look at how WP10 is helping BrightSpace co-create policy-relevant transition pathways for Europe’s food and farming systems.
