From 18 to 20 June 2025, the IAMO Forum 2025 will take place in Halle (Saale), Germany, under the theme “Rural Roots and Routes: Navigating Complexities of Quality of Life, Immobility, and Migration.” The event will provide a dynamic platform for interdisciplinary exchange on the pressing challenges facing rural areas, including population decline, climate change, and socio-economic immobility.
As rural regions worldwide experience increasing out-migration, often driven by economic hardship, environmental pressures, or political instability, this year’s forum will examine the ripple effects on local innovation, infrastructure, and overall well-being. Researchers are invited to explore how social, economic, and environmental dynamics intersect to shape decisions around migration and the quality of life in rural communities.
Key topics will include rural well-being, the impact of climate and crisis-driven migration, political drivers of (im)mobility, and new methodological approaches to understanding rural transitions. Contributions from agricultural economics, sociology, geography, and development studies—especially with a regional focus on Europe, Central Asia, and China—are encouraged.
Organized as part of the Leibniz Best Minds Project RuWell, and in collaboration with ISQOLS and OeNB, the IAMO Forum 2025 promises to deliver rich insights and practical pathways for rural resilience.
