The BrightSpace project is creating a powerful analytical toolbox to support the EU’s transition towards a Safe and Just Operating Space (SJOS) in agriculture. This deliverable focuses on assessing and coordinating existing models to ensure they collectively address the complex challenges of sustainability, equity, and resilience. Through workshops and causal loop diagramming—a method to map cause-and-effect relationships—researchers have clarified connections between SJOS variables, identified suitable models, and addressed overlaps, gaps, and inconsistencies in current approaches.
A preliminary BrightSpace baseline, representing a “business as usual” scenario for EU agriculture, has been developed to guide future analyses. This baseline sets the stage for exploring uncertainties and emerging factors that may shape the agri-food sector. The next steps involve engaging stakeholders in workshops to refine these findings, ensuring that overlooked or underestimated determinants are incorporated.
This conceptual framework emphasizes collaboration, communication, and innovation in integrating diverse models, laying the groundwork for a comprehensive toolbox to navigate the SJOS transition effectively.
