Towards a safe and just operating
space for EU agriculture

BrightSpace at the EU Vision Conference on Agriculture and Food, 8 May 2025, Brussels, BE

BrightSpace & ACT4CAP27 Showcase Tools for a Sustainable EU Agri-Food Future

At last week’s 2025 EU Vision Conference on Agriculture and Food BrightSpace and its fellow project ACT4CAP27 both joined the debate on shaping a vibrant, resilient agri-food sector. Project delegates from both consortia took part in plenary sessions and breakout discussions, aligning their work with the conference’s goals of stakeholder dialogue, roadmap refinement, and planning for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) beyond 2027.

Bringing Evidence to the Table
BrightSpace is tackling the challenge of keeping EU agriculture within a “safe and just operating space.” By combining data on greenhouse-gas emissions, biodiversity boundaries, and socio-economic well-being, BrightSpace equips decision-makers with forward-looking projections to balance environmental limits with fair returns for farmers.

Meanwhile, ACT4CAP27 is developing a next-generation “modelling toolbox” that integrates economic, social, environmental, and climate indicators to assess how new farm and food policies will play out across Europe. This hands-on toolkit helps policymakers explore “what-if” scenarios—from digitalisation and animal-welfare standards to sugar taxes—and see their likely impacts on farmers, consumers, and natural resources.

At the Vision Conference’s interactive sessions—covering resilience, bioeconomy opportunities, and future-proof production chains—both projects highlighted how their modelling frameworks can feed into the CAP’s strategic priorities:

  • Investment & Generational Renewal: Demonstrating how digital tools and policy levers can boost farm productivity and attract young entrepreneurs.
  • Risk & Crisis Management: Showing how integrated indicators can reveal vulnerabilities in supply chains and guide emergency responses.
  • Bioeconomy & Nature-Climate Actions: Illustrating pathways for carbon-credit schemes, nature restoration, and sustainable trade rules.

Looking Forward
Discussions underscored the value of ongoing consultations with farmers, industry groups, scientists, and public authorities. ACT4CAP27 and BrightSpace are setting up future workshops and stakeholder platforms to refine their tools in close collaboration with the wider agri-food community. Their shared ambition — to support evidence-based, coherent policy design — mirrors the conference’s call for an “attractive, competitive, and climate‐resilient” European farming sector.

Both projects welcome further input as they move from vision to action, ensuring that when the next CAP takes effect, it is underpinned by robust analysis, inclusive dialogue, and a clear view of Europe’s economic, environmental and societal goals.
