Welcome and Recap
- The meeting opened with a recap of the third SPAB meeting, held on 16 September 2024.
Progress of the BrightSpace work with focus on Thresholds
- The Safe and Just Operating Space (SJOS) for EU agriculture has been defined in the BrightSpace project and operationalised in Deliverable 1.1
last summer. Downscaling and disaggregation of global, economy-wide concepts are based on EU policy and strategies (CAP, EGD). Policy-based thresholds are derived equivalently. Challenges were discussed concerning the continued relevance of EGD targets and objectives, and the derivation of science-based thresholds.
Expert consultation on animal welfare indicators
- The upcoming BrightSpace Expert Consultation: Animal Welfare in a Safe & Just Operating Space, 3 April 2025 was presented and discussed with SPAB members.
EC – Vision for agriculture and food: discussion on implications for BrightSpace
- Most meeting time was dedicated to discussion on the Vision by the European Commission on agriculture and food and potential implications for the BrightSpace project. A Conference on the Vision for Agriculture and Food scheduled to take place on 8 May 2025 centering around the theme of “Shaping the future of farming and the agri-food sector” aims to bring together key stakeholders – including European agri-food sectors, civil society, rural communities, consumers, think-tanks, academia, Member States and MEPs.
The BrightSpace project also aims to contribute to this debate to shape an attractive farming and agri-food sector for future generations.
The Scientific and Policy Advisory Board meetings focus in particular on ensuring that BrightSpace continues to meet its goals and provide valuable insights for policy and research. The fifth meeting is foreseen to take place in autumn.
